The Difference

,Nick Majeskie

12/14/11

Author’s Note: This essay is about the differences between the Greasers and the Americans., It is also about what the two sides have in common.

In the books The Outsiders and April Mornings there are two groups of people in each book. In April Mornings, there are the British and the Americans. In The Outsiders, there are the socs and the greasers. The two groups that I’m comparing are the greasers to the Americans. There are differences and similarities in the two groups of people.

A group in one of the books, The Outsiders is the greasers. The greasers are fighting against the socs to prove themselves. The greasers are outcasts in this book and they are frowned upon because they have bad behavior such as smoking and fighting. In the book they are not accepted in their society. In the end of the book, Randy said a very wise quote “The socs will always be socs and greasers will always be greasers”.

The other group is the Americans who are portrayed in the book April Mornings. The Americans are fighting for many things. The main thing they are fighting for is freedom. They want to be free from the King of England and don’t want to be ruled by him. Like the greasers they are outcasts. The Americans are Patriots and that was like an outcast in that time. Like the greasers, they are not as powerful, because they were outnumbered two thousand too sixty in the book.

One of the main similarities of the two groups is they have both been stereotyped in their books. The Americans are stereotyped by the British because the British think they are devious because they are not loyalists to the King. Since the Americans are patriots they don’t want to serve the King and they want to be free from the King’s commands. Since they disagreed with the British, they went to war. In The Outcasts, the socs and the greasers fought also. The greasers are stereotyped by the socs. An example of this in the book, The Outsiders, is when Randy yells to Johnny and Ponyboy that “Greasers are just white trash”.

Finally, I concluded that these two groups have differences and one is that the greasers are fighting to prove themselves and the Americans are just fighting for their freedom. Another difference is the two books occur in different time periods. There were also more casualties in April Morning than in The Outsiders because there were more American's fighting than in The Outsiders. Even though there were differences, I think there were more similarities because both groups were trying to prove themselves in their respective societies.

Foresight

Nick Majeskie

12/12/11

Author’s Note: This short essay is about what I think will happen in the book April Mornings.

In the book April Mornings, the book is leading up to a huge part. This book is in the time period of the Revolutionary War. A small town is preparing for a British army to come and attack them, so they formed a militia. The army contains thousands of British soldiers and the militia has about sixty men. Even though the odds are against the men, I still think they will win the battle to my prior knowledge of the Revolutionary War.

I predict that they will win because they have the element of surprise and I saw the movie The Patriot. In the movie there is a small village similar to the one in the book. The main characters son is in love with this girl that lives right next to him. This is the same situation in the book. In the movie the militia protects the town. In the movie, even though they don't protect the town, they protect the main characters family be putting them in hiding. Also, I have read in history books that the Americans won the war. I think they would represent this single battle as the whole war. Why would they write a book about a small town losing a battle there is no point. So I think the small town would win the battle.

Finally, I would think the small town would win the war because of my prior knowledge of historical events in time. I am not sure why the writer would write about a battle that would be lost when history has proved that the battle was won.

The Other Side of the Story

Nick Majeskie

12/7/11

Author’s Note: This is short story is about how different points of view effect how the reader understands the story.

In April Mornings, written by Howard Fast, the plot of the story is the British are coming to the main character’s home town during the Revolutionary War. The town forms a militia to fight off the British soldiers if they come. The messenger comes running down the road yelling the British are coming. The story is written in Adam Cooper’s point of view. From this perspective, a lot of events and characters are described in a way that creates furious and gloomy emotions in the reader’s point of view about the characters and how Adam reacts to everyone.

One way that Adam’s point of view influences the reader's interpretation, is how this perspective shows different ways. One example is when Adam drew the water and sang his song to clean the water. His brother saw this and knew their father doesn’t like it when Adam sings the song, SO the little brother blackmails Adam for a drink of water. Even when he says he won’t tell his father he does. The point of views matter here because for Levi (younger brother) it is a win, win situation. In this situation for Adam his only chance is if he gives Levi a drink and hopes he won’t tell. However, the reader would feel a lot differently about the scene if the novel was written in the point of view of Levi. For instance, the reader wouldn't think that Levi is a little snitch and tell their father. If it was in his perspective, it would make him look smart.

As you can see, the point of view of a story forces the reader to see just one side of an event or topic. In April Mornings the narrator's perspective makes the reader think differently. Everyone has a different point of view, but in this book we are persuaded to interpret the book through the eyes of one character.

Judgmental

Author’s Note: This essay is about defying stereotypes which is one of the themes in the book The Outsiders and real world examples.

11/21/11

Nick Majeskie

There are many stereotypes in the world today. Examples are nerds, age, and looks. People are stereotypical about nerds because we think they are always on their computers either playing a game or hacking something. I know some people that consider themselves nerds but, they aren’t going around hacking items. The socs and the greasers are both being stereotyped in the book The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hilton. Defying stereotypes is one of the main themes. You can’t always find the truth about people by stereotyping them.

In the book there were two types of groups; the greasers and the socs. The greasers are stereotyped because people think the average greaser is a delinquent kid and they are considered the outcasts because they live on the wrong side of the neighborhood. One way they were stereotyped in the book was at the beginning of the book, where Randy said “Greasers are just white trash”. This is stereotypical because one character named Ponyboy is considered a greaser but, he isn’t the stereotypical greaser. He is kind and intelligent, not rugged and dirty. The book indicated that Ponyboy was very intelligent in language arts. If he were a stereotypical greaser, he wouldn’t care about school.

The other group is the socs. They are stereotyped by the greasers. The greasers think they are stuck up snobs that get what they want and are wealthy. They are stereotyped because they are more affluent. An example in the book is when the socs are stereotyped by the greasers when Ponyboy yells “WELL, SOCS ARE WHITE TRASH WITH MUSTANGS”; he says this right before Johnny kills Bob. Meaning they have money because they drive mustangs. One character that proves that they are stereotyped is Cherry, who is a soc. She is pleasant and brilliant and not stuck up like a stereotypical soc. This is proven when Ponyboy is amazed when they are talking to them and don’t leave.

There are many people that are stereotyped in the book The Outsiders, but people aren’t just being stereotyped in the book; there are people in the real world being stereotyped. One example is when people are judged by where they live. If they live in an affluent neighborhood, people assume they are rich. Conversely, if they live in a neighborhood that has smaller homes, it is assumed they are poor.

One example for me is when I walked into a shoe store with my brother who is only a year older than me. We started to look at shoes. When I reached for a box to try the shoes on, the clerk yelled at me and said, “Hey, you have to pay for that”, and started to walk towards me. This proves I was judged by the clerk because he thought I was going to steal the pair of shoes because I look young.

Finally, there are plentiful ways people are being stereotyped by other people. This happens in books, movies, and real world examples like when I went into the shoe store. The only reason people are stereotyped is because the people judging have seen the same scenario before and they jump to the conclusion before that person being judged can do anything about it. It is best to give people a chance before you jump to conclusions, but sometimes that easier said than done.

Definition of Family

11/15/11

Nick Majeskie

Author’s Note: This story is about one of the main themes in this story; which is definition of family.

There are many themes in the book “The Outsiders”, written by S.E. Hinton. The themes are defying stereotypes, definition of family, and loss of innocence. The one I’m focusing on is definition of family. The reasons I’m doing this is because it seems to me that in most movies now a days there aren’t parents or they are crazy parents. One example is the Fairy Odd Parents. The main characters name is Timmy and he has these really awkward parents and never notice all the magic going on from his Fairy’s, so where are all the parents?

In the book “The Outsiders”, the main characters names are Ponyboy and Johnny. They both are considered greasers and outcasts. They are the youngest members in the greaser’s gang. Another thing they have in common is their families. They both come from broken families and they don’t have a good life at home. They both have guardians that yell at them and don’t get along well with each other.

Ponyboy’s family likes him and protects him from the harmful stuff in the world. The main issues with his family are his parents are dead. The parents of Ponyboy died from a horrible car accident so Ponyboy’s family is his two older brothers. His two older brother’s names are Sodapop and Darry Curtis. Sodapop is the middle brother and is the more caring brother and is very laid back. One quote in the book for Sodapop is “Hey there Pony, were ya been?”, he said in a sleepy voice (pg. 45), when Ponyboy came home way too late. This quote shows how Sodapop is way more laid back. Then there is the oldest brother Darry. Darry is more of a firm person and sometimes gets cranky on his youngest brother Ponyboy. A quote for Darry is, “WHERE IN THE ALMIGHTY UNIVERSE WERE YOU?” he yelled (pg.45). This quote shows how Darry can be a cranky to his little brother. Both brothers care deeply for Ponyboy. They just show their care in different ways.

Johnny’s family is worse than Ponyboy’s. Johnny has a family with a mom and dad but, that isn’t a good thing. His parents beat him especially his dad and yell at him. When Johnny was in the hospital from what happened to him at the church he thought the only reason his mom would show up is to nag on him for getting hurt at the church. Early in the book Johnny said, “It isn’t the same when you old folk don’t care about ya”, he said this when Ponyboy told him he had it all and that the gang loved him because he was the gang’s pet member. What I think this means is he doesn’t care about something unless his parents care about the same thing, but they don’t seem to care about anything he does. Sadly, Johnny dies without ever experiencing his parent’s love.

Finally, there are many more movies or books that have the same issues with the main characters. In this book it was more obvious because that was what all they talked about in the ending of the book. This proves that the definition of family means a lot to the characters of the book.

Fix your Life

11/9/11
Nick Majeskie

Author’s Note: This is a letter to Johnny on why he shouldn’t have killed Bob the soc.

Dear Johnny,

I’m writing to you because I witnessed you kill a soc. I witnessed this when I left Buck’s house to go find my wallet at the fountain. I picked it up, and then I heard Ponyboy wailing something about Darry, so I decided to say hi to you but, then the malicious mustang came. So I hid on the other side of the fountain and watched you guys fight the socs and saw that you killed one. Once I saw this, I darted back to Buck’s house for the party and you guys showed up looking for Dally. It was then that I understood you were running from the cops. So the main reason I’m writing to you, is to tell you that you should have done things differently.

At the drive in you disgusted me by making them mad by picking up their girlfriends. That is when this whole fight started. You could have went at this a different way but, you chose to kill. You should have gone for help, because maybe Bob wouldn’t have died. You should have gone to the police first because now you are in bigger trouble for running. I know you got beaten up by Bob before but, now you are screwed because you are running from the cops.

Ponyboy’s brothers stopped at my house looking for you guys. You could have just wounded Bob and scared the rest off instead of killing him. In addition for them coming after you, you had to run away to stay away from the cops. Also you ran away to a church and set it on fire! Everything went downhill since you killed the soc. What were you thinking?

I was completely shocked that you, of any one killed him. I know that was the soc that beat you up but, now you are running away from the cops because you’re in deep trouble. Once the police catch up to you, they are going to throw you in jail. Trust me if you wanted to create a decent life for yourself, you shouldn’t have killed him. Now you may face the rest of your life in jail. You may never be able to live the American dream. You may never have a wife, family or a job to support yourself or family. Since you ran away to the church, the pole fell on you and now you are paralyzed for the rest of your life. Even if you don’t get caught by the police, the socs are going to come after you because Bob was one of their numerous leaders. Do you want to always be on the run, hiding from the socs and police? How can you be on the run when you are paralyzed?

Johnny, you should have been honest and not lived in fear. If you would have chosen honesty and integrity, you would not have ruined your life. And that, is exactly what you have done with your choices. It baffles me on why you made these choices. You have terminated your life by making bad choices. You were very absurd with your choices. There will be tremendous suffering in your life because of what has happened. Now it is time to make a good choice and figure out how to turn your life around.

Sincerely,
A greaser

Proud to be an American

Author’s Note: This is a story about why I’m still proud to be an American.

Nick Majeskie

10/25/11

I’m proud to be an American. The word proud is used by many people and used towards many things. Proud means to me, something pleasing or it is superb. That is why I’m proud to be an American. If I wasn’t proud of America I wouldn’t be living here. They stand up for what is right. They fight against terrorist and many other dreadful things. They also help though in need. There are numerous things to be proud of in America.

One thing is, in this country you have freedom to speak and believe what you want. Unlike in other countries you could die for what religion you believe in because other people contradict with you. Such as in India they believe that the cow is the extraordinary animal and you aren’t a loud to kill them and use them as meat, that is unheard of in India but, in India you don’t die for it, they just won’t sell it in the stores there. As well as speak we have a democracy. We get to chose who leads are country which is the president, they aren’t born into it. Also the president doesn’t get complete control of everything there are branches in the government so he doesn’t have control of everything.

In addition to having a democracy and freedom of speech, the U.S also helps countries in urgent need. One example is Hati after the earthquake. We were sending people there to help clean up and help with handing out food and donating money. As well as Hati they also helped Japan out after the tremendous title wave. Also they help hand out food and help clean up. Also instead of just helping other countries they also help our own country. They help suffering citizens by giving them health care, as well as food assistance, and subsidized housing.

Another reason I’m proud is they fight against terrorism. In the last couple of months the U.S has captured two leaders of Al Qaeda to help terminate terrorism. So they are helping innocent people stay safe. Also they help other countries in their own wars for what is right such as the war in Iraq. This could help stop terrorist from forming so more people stay safe.

Finally I’m proud to be an American because they help people. They also stand up for what is right. They show this by helping people in our country and others. As well as helping they have a democracy. So many people so be proud to be an American.

Misleading Documents

Author's Note: This essay is about why does the main character complain about something but, always needs there help or always goes back to an agency.

10/17/11

Nick Majeskie

Dear Alex Rider,

I have been reading documents on your life (Alex Rider series) and seem to me that you are working for an agency named MI6. It occurs to me that you always say you hate MI6 and they are never there for you when you need them. So if you hate them so much then why do you go back to them?

I don’t understand the constant wail of you saying they are no help when they saved your life many times. If they really didn’t help you would be died by now. Then if they weren’t a help you would be died from the storm breaker computer from the malicious made man that hated England. Also they give you gadgets, for every possible thing that could happen, such as every time you get locked in a cell you find away to escape with the gadgets. Even though your disgust them you always go back to them. At first you seemed to like working for them but, obviously that has changed. Finally the last couple of reasons are you got yourself into this in the first document (First book) I read about you it said you were snooping around and you found out about of them and then you had to become one. So you brought this upon yourself.

There is many ways you could have went about this. You didn’t have to snoop around you could just have stayed normal. You could have just gone back to school but, you had to know so now you’re too far into this now. So you did this to yourself. So suck it up and do not complain about it.

Story of a Smoker

Authors Note: This piece is a story about why you shouldn’t smoke, because smoking is bad for health.

10/12/11

Nick Majeskie

Did you know 443,000 die from smoking related problems each year? Lung, larynx, esophageal, and oral cancer kills most smokers each year. Most smokers don’t realize this is happening to people who smoke every year. If you don’t want to end up like the average smoker then stay away from the stuff. That is some reasons why smoking is bad.

First it starts out as “Oh, it is only one it won’t hurt” it turns into smoking more than a pack a day. Then you will end up with some serious problems. People won’t want to be around you because they will get sick of smelling the smoke nonstop. I know I wouldn’t want to be around you. Also the average smoker spends around $165 dollars a month on cigarettes. That is 1,980 dollars a year you could buy a used car with that money. I don’t know why it tantalizes people to smoke cigarettes it just makes them look absurd. It baffles me how people think it is good to smoke. A trend seems to start then your friends will start smoking to and that would hurt your social group then you and your friend will end up with health problems. It can also lead to hair loss, turning your teeth yellow, giving you wrinkles at early age.

They’re many harmful effects of smoking. So if you want health and appearance problems then do not smoke. It will help your overall health in the long run. It will also keep your friends and family from the risk of trying it or second hand smoking. So tell your friends and family stay away from smoking.

Might Casey

Author’s Note: This is a letter from his General manger saying what he did wrong for being so cocky and what consequences are.

9/26/11

Nick Majeskie

Dear Casey,

I have saw your last game, I also saw you strike out to end the game. Thanks to “Mighty Casey” we lost and now we aren’t going to the playoffs because if that game. The Nashville Sound is going to the playoffs instead of us. Flynn and Jimmy Blake came through for you and you couldn’t follow up. If you weren’t so cocky and tried to swing at the first two pitches we could have won.

I know you came through at other times but, when it came to the big stuff you failed me, I’m disappointed of your performance and your cocky display. That proves that if you’re cocky you will never prevail. Maybe if you did come through I wouldn’t be that mad at you.

See now you have learned a life lesson maybe that will help you next year I don’t have to offer you another contract since yours expired this year I’m considering not to. I will have to discuss with the fellow board members to see if we should or shouldn’t offer you a contract. I paid big bucks for you to come here and lead Mudville to its first playoff appearance or maybe a world championship. I traded many players to get you and when it is your time to shine but, you were too cocky to swing.

The board of Mudville baseball is disappointed in your judgment of how you should have played the game and hears by not giving you a contract next year so you will become a free agent and another team may pick you up if they want.

Sincerely,
General Manger Bob Smith

NBA Good and the Bad

This year the bucks had a chance of going to the playoffs again when they were well under five hundred for winning percentage. I personally think that is horrible and that they had a chance of going to the playoffs. I think the reasoning is because there were a lot of good teams and it was either you were under five hundred by a lot or you were over five hundred by a lot. There were a few middle teams but, not that many as last year. After a while though all the good teams are starting to get old except for the Thunder, Heat, and Bulls. Those are the good young teams the Bucks are young but, they are not good. There are many teams that haven't been heard of but, they are getting better.

For the last ten years there are a few teams that always have bad records such as the Kings, Nets, Bobcats, and Wizards. Most people probably haven't heard of the Kings because they were never good and the Jazz were a good team until they traded Deron Williams. Now he is on the Nets and the Nets are still not good. A team that is getting better are the Knicks they have superstars Amer'e Stadimerer and Carmleo Anthony. These guys make every all-star team every year. The Knicks are the team that has a good chance of doing good. This year in the playoffs they got a bad matchup against the Celtics. The Celtics are a good team. So the Knicks got out in the first round. But, there are many good teams out there too.

Some of the good teams for the last decade where out of the playoffs fast. A good team has been the Celtics, Lakers, Bulls, Heat, Thunder, and Spurs. These are teams that have been good lately and have won many games. These teams record are all above five hundred. The reason they are good is because they have always a least one super-star basketball player but, some have more then one. Some teams that have more than one good player is the Heat, Spurs, Lakers, and Celtics. For the Heat the stars are Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh. This team was created when LeBron left the Cavs. One other good team with many stars are the Celtics. They have Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett. This team has been good forever. Also the Lakers are amazing with Kobe Bryant and Paul Gasol. There good because they have a major rebounder and someone who can score a lot of points. Finally the last good team with more than one star player is the Spurs. They have two amazing point guards Manino Ganoblmi and Tony Parker. As well as good point guards they have a hall of fame center Tim Duncan. This is why the goods teams are good they have more than one star player.

The NBA has a lot of good teams and a lot of teams that no one has heard of. Soon all the teams that you hear of you won't hear as much because they lost there good players will be gone. Also all of the bad teams will start to be heard of a lot because they are getting better. That is why the NBA stays interesting. There are the good and there are the bad.

I also play soccer. I have missed soccer for the last 3 weeks because my baseball coach schulded all of our practices and games when I have soccer practice. I think my soccer coach is mad at me. I still like soccer. Soccer is one of my favorite sports also my team is pretty good too. We are in the A-division and most of the kids are on susexx but, we all play on Pewaukee.

Baseball

The Brewers are pretty good this year. They are doing better than they did last year. The reason they are doing better is that they have better pitching this year. They always had good hitting but, there pitching is bad but, now they have to pitchers that can get you a win everytime and that is Giardo and Girenke. They are the best pitchers for the brewers. I wish I could go to more Brewers games but, my mom never wants to. I love baseball.

Random Story

Once upon a time there was a kid named Teddie. He was walking in a cave, he was looking for a spoon to eat his jelly with. Many people asked "Why don't you go to the store". He would always say "I have no money". As Teddie searched he could never find that spoon. Finally he decided to give up on looking but, he came across a map to the golden spoon. The best spoon of them all.
So Teddie set off to find this golden spoon. He heard from a wise old camper. That it makes everything taste good. So Teddie's jelly would taste even better. The map said to go to China that is where the hidden temple is. So Teddie bought a plane ticket and went to China in search of the golden spoon.
When Teddie arrived at the temple he was surpised of how many people were there and that he had to pay to get in. He found out is was a tourist place. He searched the whole temple and didn't find the golden spoon. Then he fell over and hit the ground hard and it activated a secert door and fell in. He was surpised that the golden spoon was hiden in there and he wondered what SSUPPPLIEES CLLOSSET meant. When he picked up the spoon the building started to fall apart. He ended up escaping and eating his jelly with the golden spoon.

NBA Playoffs

This year in the NBA there is a lot of teams that are good this year but, weren't last year. One team that is like that is the Bulls. They were bad last year because the cavs were so much better. Also in the playoffs all the good teams are out of the playoffs. The celtics are out and the Lakers. Those were the two teams in the finals last year the Lakers won. This year it won't be a high scoring game because all the good teams are out but, it is better for the NBA because more teams would win the Finals.

Trench ball

Last year in trench ball my team won it for the sixth grade. We went undeafted our name was the beast my friend shaun started the team. The boys on the team were me, shaun, colin, and Jackson H. We didn't take that long to decide the name. Also we didn't take that long to decide the color it was dumb because we were black. It was getting hot after the last game. We never had a choice on anything but, we still won so it was fun. It hurt my arm though because the ball was so small and light. I had baseball that day and I couldn't throw because it hurt. Trench ball was fun.

Bag story

One day Teddy was walking with his pet fork that his name was Sporky. They kept walking and he found a cotton field and the were deadly to Teddy because he didn't like them. Sporky had no fears beside the fear of spoons. So Sporky leashed out at the cotton balls but, he was low on energy and he ate a screw to fill up his strength and defeated the cotton balls. Then Sporky missed the last cotton ball and hit Teddy and Teddy went around screaming random bystander with his hands up in the air.

He was crying out "Where is my mommy" then the mini magic train came flying down the sky. He looked up and saw his mom driving the train and she said "Teddy drink the soup" then she threw it to Teddy. Teddy missed and hit his head and he was knocked out. Then Sporky had to drag him to the magic cue tip. Then Sporky had to feed him with the soup and Teddy survived. They lived forever and ever and Teddy always feared cotton balls.

Kemba Walker is one of the best players in college. His team won the NCAA tourney against Bulter a few days ago 52-41. It was a very low scoring game with such a good offensive team like Uconn. The highest scorer of the game was Kemba Walker. He had 15 points. Second on there team was Jeremy Lamb with 11 points all coming in the second half. In the last game I was rooting for Uconn to win the NCAA Finals.

Essay

Literary analysis

4/5/11

“I stood there as still as a rock. As I sat there waiting for the white dove appear all the animals came out of the thick forest and walked passed me, not evening noticing me. Yet I stead still until the white dove came floating down from the sky. The white dove moved slowly. She came in the end to where I sat and began to feed at my feet. I quickly grabbed the bird and had palms on wings and fingers on neck” page 3. That what happened when the fowler caught the white dove in the short story The Hundredth Dove, written by Jane Yolen. This short story is a mode of literature but, every story is. This short story clearly states that it is the romantic mode of literature.

There are many things in a romantic mode of literature one of them is the plotline. In a romance plotline there are only two things. The first one is there is a minor conflict. This shows when the king orders the fowler to catch one hundred doves. The fowler caught ninety nine doves but, he need one more. So there is just this white one left and it was impossible to catch. The last part is it ends with life symbolism. The life symbolism is when he gave up hunting and lived off berries for the rest of his life. That would be the plotline.

As well as a plotline there are many characteristics. There are a lot of characteristics but, some are very similar. The main ones are the story isn’t realistic, good is powerful, evil is weak, and the main character is in control. It shows how unrealistic it is when the white dove starts to talk to the fowler. When good was powerful it was when the fowler finally caught the white dove but, also that shows how evil is weak when they simply killed the white dove and the king didn’t have his wedding. Also the main character is in control because he didn’t have to kill the dove. Those are the characteristics.

In a mode of literature there also is a purpose. The purpose is the last part of a mode of literature. The purpose for a romantic mode of literature is escapism and we go to a world of innocence. This shows when the fowler gives up hunting he is escaping harm from animals.

Also there is symbolism that follows the story. There was a lot of symbolism in this story. Some symbolism is there are unicorns. That happened when the fowler was trying to catch the white dove. Also the dove is symbolism and there were many doves in the short story so that would be some symbolism. As well as doves there was mist that had happened when the fowler said “At dusk the doves came, settling over the clearing like a gray mist” page 2. Another symbolism is there was growing plants at the fowler feet he described. There was a lot of symbolism in this story.

Finally I liked this short story. It was interesting how things ended the way they did. This book also shows how a romantic mode of literature is written. Everything follows the story. The plotline, characteristics, and purpose all follow the romantic mode of literature. The short story The Hundredth Dove clearly states it is a romantic mode of literature.

NCAA

I think Uconn is going to win the NCAA tourney. Uconn has many good players one of their best players is Kemba Walker he is averaging 25 points a game that is really good the only one who did better was Jimmer Fridette lost to Florida. Uconn are the most likely team to win. Though I want kentucky to win the NCAA tourney. They have Brandon Knight who hits key three pointers to keep Kentucky to stay in the tourney. I hope Kentucky can win the NCAA tourney.

Granny Ed and the Lewisville Raiders

Nick Majeskie

" I had timed the jump perfectly and rebounded the ball. I could see the other teams center that is seven feet tall come crashing into me. Then my grandma came rushing on the court (She is the head coach). She told me I had a one and one coming up on the free throw line and she told me to make the first one and miss the second one so Al could rebound it and put up a shot to win the game" page 13. This is what had happened in the last seconds in the basketball game when the Lewisville Raiders won the state championship. The short story Granny Ed and the Lewisville Raiders, written by Rae Rainey, clearly show that this is a romantic mode of literature.

The short story mode of literature is romance. If the story is the romantic mode of literature then there is a plotline. In a romance plotline there is only two things. The two things are at the beginning there is a minor conflict in the story. The minor conflict is that they need a coach. They find a coach and the coach is Granny Ed. In addition in the plotline the end ends with life symbolism which is when something good happens. The life symbolism in the story is that they won the State Championship.

In addition to a plotline there are characteristics. In a romance there is a lot of characteristics. The first characteristics is everything seems better than it really is. It shows this by is when the Raiders need a coach and they find one and it is a grandma. What if she got sick there was no assistant coach so they would have to forfeit or if she got hurt from old age. Another characteristic is that it is a fantasy vision and unrealistic. It is unrealistic when they won the championship because what team has a grandma as a coach and wins state. The next characteristic is when the main character is in control and can't do wrong this showed when Sport jumped up and got the rebound and was fouled and made the foul shot and missed to help win the game. Finally good is powerful and evil was weak. The Raiders won and the Tigers lost.

The last part is the purpose. The purpose is when you escape to a world of innocence. That showed when it had a happy ending. Which is when the Raiders won state. Everything goes right for the characters in the story and everything did go right because they were supposed to be really bad since they lost their real head coach.

This short story seemed to me to be a romantic mode of literature. Everything about it followed the romantic mode of literature. The plotline, characteristics, and the purpose matched. I liked this book because it had a happy ending and they won state. Granny Ed and the Lewisville Raiders was a romantic mode of literature.

Childhood memory

My favorite childhood memory is when I was 7. My family went up to the Dells and we went golfing. I remeber that it was so fun up until the 9th hole. On the 9th hole that hole was very wet. When everyone got to the green this jet of water shot out and hit me in the face and I fell down and I fell in the mood. Yet I didn't care so I was walking around covered in mud and wet and I still finished the 18 holes. I had lots of fun that day.

This reminds when my dad beat a pro golfer in one hole of golf. When my dad won he got 100 dollars and a free pass for four to golf at a near by golf course. When he won he won he was jumping around with joy. I have never seen my dad be that happy but, he spent the free coupons on his friends not family.

Now my dad doesn't let me golf because of baseball and he doesn't want to mess up my swing my dad also loves baseball and now he takes me to a highschool varisity coach to have hitting lessons. I love going to the hitting lessons because they are fun and I get to do them with Robert.

Pumpkins

When my family came home from Cooperstown and Nigara Falls. There was a pumpkin vine and there was two huge pumpkins and over time. More grew and grew now we have up to ten pumpkins but, some are really small and we are thinking about sell some and making pumpkin seeds. We made some last year but, my mom burned them, they still tasted pretty good. Usually we don't get pumpkins but, this year we won't have to. That reminds me when we bought a huge one it took very long to rot.

Fetch Response

Fetch Response

Nick Majeskie

3/9/11

"When I walked into the room for my interview with the professor a great big dog came hurling at me. Once the dog reached he knocked me down to the floor. The professor told me to play with the dog while he got ready. I was playing with a ball and I would throw the ball he would bring it back. After a while it was boring me and I decided to throw it out the window then the dog jump start out the window." Page 59. This was the beginning the short story Fetch, written by Robb White. This book shows how a cliffhanger is written because at the end of the story it didn't have an ending. There were many things I enjoyed in this story but, many more dislikes.

I didn't like this book. There are a couple reasons why I didn't. One of the main reasons was it was a cliffhanger ending. The book ended when the professor said “I need to know what type of man I'm bringing on this expedition" on page 61. There could be many ways the book could have ended now since there is a cliffhanger. To me the ending wraps up the whole story and summarizes what had happened. Also the cliffhanger leaves the story as a tragedy mode of literature or a comedy.

As well as having a cliffhanger it was too short. I had no clue on what was happening all I know was a professor was taking college kids on some expedition. They could have at least said what the expedition was about. Since it was short it didn't have enough detail it was hard telling what was going on. They writer could have expanded the story. He could have at the end put down if he got the job or not. Then if he did then tell what expedition they were going on and tell the adventure of the expedition.

Finally the book was hard to understand. The short story was hard to understand mainly because of the cliffhanger ending and the lack of detail. This short story could have had a lot more understanding if Robb White took off the cliffhanger ending. As well as taking the cliffhanger ending add more to the story. This book was very hard to understand.

A Boy and a Man

A Boy and a Man Response

3/2/11

Nick Majeskie

It was cold in the Alpps and I was climbing up the mountain, when a stumble on a trench. In the trench I could hear screams for help. Since something was screaming I answered with a "hello" page 117. That was when Rudi knew he must save the person in the trench. Little did he know the man stuck in the trench was Captain Winter the best mountain climber. A Boy and a Man, written by James Ramsey Ullman, is very interesting. When reading this short story it is clear that this is a comedy mode of literature.

Since the short story is a comedy mode of literature it has a plotline. Comedy plotlines start with everyday normal life. Everyday normal life for Rudi is climbing mountains because he loves climbing. Next on the plotline there is a minor conflict with the main character. The minor problem is he found a man trapped in a trench with no food. After the minor conflict that is when the conflict is realized. It shows this when Captain Winter says "You should go get help" page 117. Rudi refuses to get help because it would take too long and Captain Winter would be frozen to death. When the conflict is realized there is a resolution after. The resolution is when the problem is solved. Rudi solved the problem by making a rope with his clothes and with his staff he was using to climb the mountain. Then Captain Winter climbed up the clothes rope and was safe. Lastly the characters go back to everyday life. Rudi goes home and Captain Winter goes and climbs other mountains.

In addition to a plotline in a comedy mode of literature there are characteristics. There are only two characteristics and they are if the story is realistic and that the main character is in control. These two characteristics are shown in many ways. One of the ways it shows reality is when the boy found the man trapped in the trench. Also one way the main character showed his control was when Rudi had a choice to save him or, he could have tried to go get help but, that could risk the Captain Winter's life.

As well as the characteristics there is also the purpose. The purpose of a comedy mode of literature is when there is a happy ending and when we can solve our own problems. The happy ending was that Captain Winter was saved. Rudi showed that he could solve his own problems he did that by saving Captain Winter.Everything that is a comedy mode of literature is in this short story. Finally after stating the following information it is clear to me that this is comedy mode of literature.

Basketball

Basketball is ending soon for my team. This year we had a better season and went 10-6 in league play. The only thing that is left for basketball is the year end league tourney. Last year my team took 7th out of 16 teams that was pretty good for us last year when in league we went 4-12 and ranked 12th out of the 16 teams. This year we will be ranked in the top 5 out of 20 teams so our team has gotten better. This was probably are best year unlike the first year we were 1-15 in league and ranked 16 out of 16 teams. Our team has improved a lot since we were younger.

Half Days

I enjoy having half daya during school. When we have a half day at our school it is usually for a type of holiday but, this time it is midwinter break. I have never had off of school for a reason like that. Usually on half days when I come home from school I invite one of my friends over and we either go down his hill in his backyard or go to my house inside playing knee basketball and we pretty much hang out for the rest of the day. Another thing I would do was go to some sports practice most likely basketball. Basketball is always fun. Those are the basic things I do on a half day.

Zoobreak

Zoobreak
2/18/11

Nick Majeskie

"It was a dark gloomy night. When the team was making the Zoobreak. We rid our bikes to the beach to arrive there where the transportation was supposed to be but, wasn't there". This was a part of the book; Zoobreak written by Gordon Korman, when the team went to see their transportation wasn't there. This is one of the pieces of the puzzle that this book is the tragedy mode of literature.

If it is a tragedy, the plotline must fit. The first thing on the plotline is the world is in conflict with one of the characters. The problem is a girl in the book named Savannah lost her monkey. The monkey wasn't really lost it was stolen by the owner/zookeeper of All Aboard Animals. They knew this because they went on a school field trip to the zoo. So all of Savannah's friends are going to help he get back her monkey back. The next part of the plotline is the rise to power. That was when they had successfully gotten the girls monkey. The tragic fall is the girl couldn't stand seeing the animals suffering in the dump they call a zoo. So they break all of the animals out of their cages but, the girl said "They can't survive in the wild so we can't let them go into the wild". Next it is the tragic fall the fall was they couldn't keep hiding forty animals from their parents so they tried breaking them into another different zoo. Everything was great until the owner of “All Aboard Animals” found out where they were going and they caught them. Then the owner went crazy and pulled an out a stun gun and aimed for one of the kids but, a security guard jump in the way and got hit. Shortly after that the police showed up and arrested everyone. All of the kids got off the hook because they were doing the right thing but, the owner got thrown in jail for stealing and abusing animals. The last part on the plotline was death symbolism and that was one of the friends had to move because he had sleeping problems so he went to the other side of the country.

The plotline fits so the characteristics must fit too. The characteristics are realistic and main character is in control. This book was mostly realistic everything in the book could happen. The main character was surely in control the main character didn't have to go and try to steal her monkey back. Also when they did she didn't have to stay and say she wasn't going to leave the zoo unless they saved the rest of the animals too. In addition to that since they did save all the animals most of the kids wanted to let the animals go but, Savannah didn't let anyone let the animals go. So they had to break them into a different zoo. So certainly shows that the main character was in control.

Finally the last thing is the purpose. In a tragedy mode of literature the purpose is to learn a moral lesson and to learn from our mistakes. The moral lesson is, don't make a mountain out of a mole hill. That is when you have a minor problem and then make it into something bigger. That was shown when they stole the monkey back they didn't leave with just the monkey they left with the zoo. Also since the main character didn't want to let the animals go they had to break them into another zoo. Then when trying to break them into a different zoo they got caught. Everything would have been fine until Savannah made a mountain out of a mole hill.

The purpose was the last piece of a tragedy mode of literature. After stating the following this book is a tragic story. Everything that is a tragedy mode of literature fits the story, the plotline, characteristics, and the purpose all fits the story.

Superbowl

The Packers have won the Superbowl 31-25. This year I went to my friends house and watched the whole thing with his family and mine. This year instead of having dinner we just had snacks because we were to excitied about the game. Everything that was good except the adds on the T.V. There were only a couple good adds like the Dorritos and the one where someone said that Justin Bieber looks like a girl. I though the halftime show was good this year I usually don't watch the halftime show but, it was good this year. I'm glad the Packers won.

Soccer

Soccer is my favorite sport you go sprinting down the field neck and neck with your oppent. Oh I shoot I score soccer is my favorite sport. I play for Pewaukee and two of my friends are on my team Teddie and Gabe. Gabe plays in goal and my and Teddie play on the field once in awhile Gabe plays on the field. Soccer can be a three season sport. We play in the Fall most of our season and then we play indoor soccer and then we have a few games in the spring. Right now we play on a high school field and have eleven people on one team on the field at once it doesn't get crowded in because we play on such a big field.

Snow day

Yesterday was a snowday and my friends and I were making many things in the snow like snowman. First we my best friend came and got me and it took us 30 min to get everyone else on the street it was really hard to walk through the snow. When we finally went to my friends house we went down his mini hill in his backyard. When we were done with that we went in a court and climbed the huge mound in the middle. Then we went inside and had hot chocolate. After that we advantaged back into the snow and went to my house we ended up going back inside and we played some viedo games that is what we always do that on a snowday.

Deep Water Response

Nick Majeskie

1/28/11

Have you ever been afraid of water before? I haven't but, the main character in Deep Water is, written by William O. Douglas. This short story seemed uninteresting to me. There were many things I didn't enjoy about this short story.

Even though it is true and you can't change what happened but, you could have made it more interesting and there should have been a little more detail. It is a good thing he came over his fear and will never fear water again but, there was not much detail. It doesn't even say his name. Also at times it was detailed but, too much there is about one whole page of him going under and back up and back down when he was drownig in the pool. He stretched that part a little long, that was pretty much the whole story. In addition to that why would you he write a story about his fear?

The story was to short at times, I know it is hard to stretch things that are true but, he did once and it was the whole story the ducking part he just restated what had happened the first time he went under. Also I don't understand why he is afraid of water he is 90 percent of water in his body so he is saying he is afraid of himself. Also how would he drink water that is how you stay alive. Maybe he is only afraid of big amounts of water but, it never states that he is afraid of big amounts of water. If it did say that he was only afraid of bigger amounts of water the short story would make more sense.

In the end after reading the short story Deep Water I have realized that this piece was not written very well to my likings. If I would have to grade this short story out of five stars I would give it only two the reasoning would be uninteresting, not enough details at times and too much at others, and parts were stretched too long. I didn't enjoy reading Deep Water.

Pearl Response

Why I Didn’t like The Pearl

1/24/11

Nick Majeskie

It was I boring day while I read The Pearl. The book was as dull as ever and the chapter seemed to never end. Kino turned down the pearl buyers offer. BORING. That was how I felt when I was reading the book The Pearl, written by John Steinbeck. John Steinbeck made the book so lifeless. The book, The Pearl, was not enjoyable to read, I didn't like the book, The Pearl.

The reasons why I didn’t like the book, was there it wasn't an interesting book. In addition to that it wasn’t a book that I wanted to keep reading. Also the book had very few action parts, one time is it had action was when Kino attacked the hunters but, they shot Coyotito in the head and he died. The only other part that had action was when Kino killed the person who attacked him on the beach. There was only two action parts to me that is a boring book. This book could have been written with more action.

Other reasons were I didn’t enjoy the book was it was too short. John Steinbeck should have written more. This book was too short the story was they found a pearl that was worth a lot of money but, they were cheated by the pear buyers so he didn’t accept the offer and he tried to go to the capital. They ended up never making it to the capital and Coyotito got shot in the head from the hunters that were trying to get the pearl. After all of that they went back to their brush house and threw the pearl back into the ocean. That was what happened in the story. There should have been more to it. They should have gone to the capital and sold the pearl but, in the end they have the money stolen from them. Also the one who stole it would be his brother and after they realize it was stolen he would be long gone. Then they should go back to the brush houses and go back to their regular lives.

In the end this book seemed lifeless and not very enjoyable. There isn’t enough action or enough length to the book to my likings. If there was more action and it was a bit longer it would have been more enjoyable. In the end I didn’t enjoy reading the book The Pearl.

The lesson on Pearl

The lesson is when you become to greedy something bad is bond to happen. The bad thing that happened was when Coyotito was shot in the head by the hunter with the rifle. They became to greedy and there loss was Coyotito. They are lucky to be alive also Juana could have gotten shot instead of Coyotito. The lesson is not to become greedy.

Monday, January 17, 2011

Pearl plotline

The main lesson is that if you become to greedy something bad is bond to happen. Also this book was a tragic mode of literature. In a tragic mode of literature is starts out with the world in in conflict with the main character. The conflict is that Coyotito gets sick. Then the rise to power happens. The rise to power is they find the pearl and they cure Coyotito. Then the human flaw was that Kino became greedy. Then the tragic fall is that they have to leave because now everyone is trying to kill them because they have the pearl. The end which is death or death symbolism is that Coyotito dies.

Reflection of The Pearl

The book Pearl, written by John Steinbeck, is about a family that has a baby named Coyotito and it was stung by a scorpion. When the family goes to the doctor he won't help them because they don't have enough money to pay. So the next day they go pearling and they find a pearl. Everyone thinks it is the "pearl of the world". Now in the story they are thinking on what the buy with it because the baby was healed. Then the doctor heard they found the pearl and tricked them into thinking the baby is still sick. Then they will hire him and he will pretend that he cured him. After he pretended to cure him he left. Then late at night someone came in and tried to steal the pearl and he ended up running away but, Kino got hurt. My prediction is that the cut will get infected and the doctor has to come and heal that. Also the doctor must of been the person tring to steal the pearl.

Will the Pearl Destroy the Family?

In the book "The Pearl",written by John Steinbeck, Juana believes the pearl will destroy her family. She wants to hide the pearl and then forget where they hid it. Kino still wants to keep the pearl so his son Coyotito can go to school. The pearl could destroy the family because they might become greedy. If they do become greedy they would always fight on what to buy. If they do it would end with a them fighting and who every kills the other one first gets the pearl. Also the neighbors could destroy by tring to steal the pearl. In chapter three they already caught someone tring to steal the pearl and Kino got hurt when they were fighting. Instead of getting hurt one of them might get killed. The pearl could destroy the family.

Will the Pearl Destroy the Family?
